December 5th Market

Tower Grove Market- December 5th, 9AM-12PM
Market List; Missouri Pecans, Whole Cayuga Ducks, Grass Fed Lamb, Tomatoes, Salad Mix, Kale Bunches, Chard and Garlic

It's a funny thing when you start equating selling food to customers versus eating food that you grow. Ask any farmer and they will tell you that the first, best and often only things we grow go to our customers first and the leftovers, seconds and sometimes none, comes to us only after you have chosen. For instance, people will say; "are your radishes really spicy?" answer, "I don't know, I had exactly enough for 7 bunches so I didn't get to taste them". Biver Farms grows way too many tomatoes so we trade them tomatoes for Salsa and eat their seconds so I can sell mine to you. Occasionally I can eat mine if they have a bad spot, a split or worm hole but the best of my better tasting tomatoes are on the table at the market. Eggs you say? Well we eat the ones with cracks or the tiny ones or we don't get to eat eggs. You get excited if there is a gap between markets and you can eat a perfect tomato or break a perfectly good egg in a pan but you will turn that egg or tomato over in your hand while feeling guilty about a customer(and usually I see specific faces in my head)not getting the best of your labors. The day after the last official summer Market, both myself and Hart Beet Farm posted on Instagram about eating our good tomatoes for the first time in the season. This week we will be bringing tomatoes and salsa from the last of these for the season. We made it through the 20 degree night on Sunday but Monday's 18 for 5 hours tolled the final death knell on tomatoes and peppers in the high tunnel,  We still have greens and are saving the Redbore Kale for the last market along with the Carrots and Herbs. The Kohlrabi was almost big enough but not quite. You would think with all these killing freezes, that the bugs would slow down but in the high tunnel, Cabbage loopers, White flies and mealy worms abound.

We will have a lot of eggs. The last 3 years, we have bought 3 Rivers yearling hens from them. Friday we went to Elsah and brought back 34 more. They are in an adjustment period but we do have more eggs than usual.

Don't forget, there are still Roasting and Soup ducks left to order and we are bringing 4 extras tomorrow.

We will not be bringing drinks as it's going to be pretty cold and we only are going until Noon. See you there.

God's blessings on you and yours,

TTFN,

Sam and Bill
