It's been a time of surprises around here. First the chicken hatched out the ducklings, and finally the goose that we have had 2.5 years, finally started laying eggs, made a nest and after 38 days on that nest-at least 5 days longer than the norm, a gosling hatched out. I think there will be a couple of more, but both she and the male are very protective. Hissing and biting when I try and get too close to see what is going on under there. Just some soft peeping is all I can get out of them.
Wednesday we had a little excitement in the henhouse. Jessie who is staying with us, was helping to gather the eggs when she reached into the nesting box and pulled out this;
early on in the meal because we could only see one egg in him which broke when Jessie was maneuvering it out of the box. You can see the bulge at the neck
She carried it about a 10th of a mile away and let it go. It's always a rough decision on what to do as black snakes and many others are helpful in keeping vermin down but they do occasionally eat things that you do not want them too, eggs, bunnies, chicks. Usually we leave them alone but I can tell you, if we could've killed that one last summer which had at least 9 eggs that we could see in it, I would have. It was huge and costing us. The bigger the snake, the more it can consume such as pullets, instead of chicks, a dozen eggs instead of 5.
So this week, the Purslane is back and unbelievably the arugula is still sweet. Next week we will have lamb for Memorial day and for the first time in awhile. We're looking at 90 degrees this Saturday so stop by for a drink of Lemonade or Organic Green Tea with Jasmine, lightly sweetened with Robins Local Honey.
